Well I had my meeting with the specialists at my daughters school yesterday. Some good and bad to report. She tested off the charts when it comes to reading and language and math. However. According to the way they do things here in the great state of Louisiana she does not qualify for the gifted program. She won't be tested again for 3 years. See they couldn't accept the findings of the IQ test administer in New Mexico because it wasn't given by a school psychologist. It was given by someone Louisiana doesn't consider competent enough I guess. (She qualified in Colorado and New Mexico by the way.) Because she has taken the test so recently they can't give it to her again for a year to two years. They gave her some other test instead that measures other things. She had a couple of areas that she didn't do so well in. SOOO she will be in regular classes. I'm not really upset by that. We will continue to challenge her at home with her reading and see how it goes. She is a little self conscious about her speech and the school WILL address this issue so that is a good thing. I'm ok with this. Disappointed, yes. I want to take care of the whole girl not just that mighty brain of hers so this will be fine.
My cat. I got there 15 minutes early for my 4 o'clock appt. We didn't see a doctor until 4:45! Talk about bored to tears! She said my cat displayed the classic symptoms of a flea allergy. I know he has flea allergies. He had an issue in California with it. IT was bad BAD! However she could find no fleas. I have not seen any fleas in my house or around his bed. Apparently that is an issue here in Louisiana, fleas that is. We have had no trouble for the past 10 years living in the dryer states but now we will have to be vigilant I guess. It makes sense. There does seem to be quite a bit more "bug" activity here so I guess we'll adapt. She gave me some antibiotic pills for him. They are a treat to administer let me tell ya! I also brought home some of that flea stuff to put on both the cats necks. IF there are fleas at least they will be protected I guess. AHH Louisiana!
Go forth and prosper on this 16th of May!

I never had the benefit of those kinds of programs while I was inschool. It was to the school's detriment as I entertained myself to the point that I was the most penalized honour student in school. Once I got on student council I was greeted in the office with the phrase "are you here for business or pleasure?".
Don't worry about the school and keep her brain chugging at home and she'll turn out just fine.
If he already has symptoms without the fleas, then I don't want to see him when he's actually got bugs! Poor fellow.
I agree with Gabby. As long as she is getting challenged in some way and isn't board it should be okay. Maybe you can work something out with her teacher, that she does extra work or does the same work, but with a higher degree of difficulty.
I never knew how important academically gifted education was until mr. slade had to do a report on it for his education class. It turns out that these kids are the least likely to be spotted because we are so PC about giving special treatment...but then when these kids are put in regular classrooms they get bored and are more likely to DROP OUT of school!!! Not that this will happen to your daughter of course, cuz you guys are doing it the right way by challenging her at home! Good job! But it is sad to know that so many of these kids had such great potential!
Another thing that studies show is that schools are less likely to test kids who have "ethnic" sounding names! So John is much more likely to get tested than Jamal. CRAZY!
My cat has a flea allergy too. She gets these funny bumps all over her back and I never see fleas on her. We do have to watch for fleas here in the south.
I hope your daughter doesn't get bored in her classes. My daughter was in upper level classes, but she had one class that was on level. She was bored to tears in that class. I never let her take an on level class after that. If she does really well maybe they will move her up in a year. Good luck.
