Can't we all just get along?

Ok. This is starting to really get on my nerves. We've lived in Louisiana since January and in this 8 months we have discovered that there is this undercurrent of racism. They assume that you are like minded and feel free to say things that I find to be ignorant. I thought that the two races have been living together for so long around here that that attitude would be less common. I was wrong.

Today the wife of a man running for the school board came to my door. When she got to the end of her presentation she asked if she could put a sign in my yard. I told her I don't' feel comfortable endorsing one candidate when I know nothing of the others. I don't want to do that if I'm not 100% sure that is who I plan to vote for. She then proceeded to tell me about the other candidates. Now she didn't come out and say anything ugly about either of them. She did however make sure I knew that one of them was black. "He's a black man who works for the schools." She told me the other was a female dentist. We talked a little more and I asked for a number to call if I decided I wanted a sign and as she gave it to me she mentioned that the other candidates were the black man and the dentist. Maybe I'm reading more into it than was intended. I think I'm becoming a little more sensitive to it though.

When my daughter started riding her bus the bus driver felt she needed to inform me that there were black children on the bus that my daughter would be riding. WHAT?? NO WAY! Not in the south! *dripping with sarcasm* Come on I expected it. Why wouldn't I? Why would she have to tell me? So I could change my mind? I'm sure some people do. What sort of message is that sending to our children? You don't have to deal with that group of people. How is that preparing them for the real world?

How ridiculous.

Anyone who doesn't believe that racism isn't alive and well in the U.S. is living with their head in the sand. There will never be an end to the hatred in my lifetime and sometimes fear what my children will experience.

Sadly, I must say that racism is still alive and well in my neck of the woods. So is antisemitism. So is homophobia. People fear what they do not understand. Ignorance is prevalent. Haters have an agenda. They unabashadly spread their poison. The best you can do is try to pass your love of all people to your children. I avoid people who make hate remarks or jokes. Isn't it wierd how they assume you feel the way they do?

There will always be those among us that don't understand and don't accept. All you can do is make sure you aren't sucked in and make sure your children know how to recognize these narrowminded folk for themselves. That way they can make their own decisions on who is fit to be around.

While in Virginai,we were told by family that if any people, other than whites, were to move into the community, that it would not go over well with the townfolk. I can't believe this still happens in the US!!!

It is a shame that it still exists. It is a shame that people can't look inside the person and judge him from how they act instead of how they look.

Racism is alive and well in Canada too...god knows how many times I've never got a call back for a job I was quaified for because they couldn't pronounce my name. I am Greek, even tho I look white...my name gives me away as an ethnic minority. But I do feel that unless parents teach them otherwise, children are accepting of other races. I think that woman clearly needs to give her head a shake. Maybe I'll get Pizzaslinger to pay her a visit.
