I don't know what happened, either, but this is all so disgusting and scary all at the same time. I always felt safe in school, I always thought that school was the last place something like this could happen. I can't imagine how children feel as they hear these stories and go to school thinking that it's not really safe afterall, that it's all an illusion.
So, I know I totally missed the point of this post, but I want to introduce an element of taboo to this discussion: how does race factor into these last two slayings, and on a larger scale, mass murder in general? Do you think it is a coincidence that these last two cases have been white men seizing and murdering these girls? How often do you hear of African American men doing something like this? Sure, the black community has got more than their fair share of murders, but why is it that when you hear a case of someone kidnapping and torturing and killing someone (usually a female and usually young), they're almost always white? Why do African Americans tend to prefer random/heat of the moment type killings whereas whites lean towards the more macabre premeditated murders? In addition, why do most school shootings (executed by the students) include white gunmen? There must be a reason.
There has always been evil in this world. It is hard to understand. There is also a great deal of untreated mental illness. People are often in denial about a family members illness or when they try to get help it is difficult to find. How to explain this to small children? Answer their questions honestly. Let them do most of the talking . Some times they just need to vent. Tell them that most people are good. Help them to feel safe. Let them know that no matter what happens in this life you will always love them.
I seriously can not bring myself to look into the details of that story...I know what happened & can not listen to the news when they talk about it...totally inconceivable.
It is sad what is going on. I couldn't believe that sicko up in Amish country killed little children as young as 6 yrs old. It is especially bad since those people are not used to violence.
I suppose we all need to hug our children a little harder. Isn't it a shame that our schools are no longer safe. My kids are all graduated but I do have grandkids and it scares me half to death.

My heart broke when I saw what happened in Pensylvania. This is terrible. Schools have become a freakin war zone.
My daughter goes to school next year. I'm looking for a shop that carries kevlar jumpers.

Hug her hard.
This in one of the many reasons why I am considering home school for my son.
