I'm in the wrong business. I just had a heating and cooling guy come out to check my heater for the winter. You know to make sure everything is in good order, clean any parts that need cleaning etc... The guy was here maybe fifteen minutes, told me I had no filters to clean and that everything was fine. He then wrote me up an invoice for 75.00!
While he was up in my attic he said he wondered if I had a second heating unit. I told him that I DID have another thermostat in the addition. He checked for voltage and said it was live and checked in the attic of the addition. Nothing. He said he didn't know where it went but he'd leave it off. That's when he went to his truck to get the paper work. That's it! I guess his thoughts on the second unit weren't enough to make him investigate the second thermostat. He told me that with electric furnaces they either work or they don't so I was fine.
I coulda saved my 75 dollars for that advice! I feel a little ripped off.
OH! And did I mention he brought some girl with him? I can assume that they don't pay her to come and stand on the ladder to my attic. I figure she was his girlfriend. ARG!

oh man would I be mad! That is crazy! You know, you always get screwed when you try to take preventative measures--whether it's with health care or heating systems!
That's annoying but at least you are proactive and get things checked out before there's a problem. Most of us just wait until it's 20 below and we have no heat or 109 degrees with no A.C. Maybe the chick was his "assistant"? he he
I'd call the main office and talk to a superior of his about the girlfriend being there, but I'm a bitch like that. ;-)
That is so unprofessional, he shouldn't have brought his girlfriend with him (I supervise contractors and I've given dressing downs for that in the past). It also contravenes health and safety - I would doubt she is a qualified electrician otherwise she'd be out doing jobs herself.
I'm with Bekah that you should talk to his superiors. It's not being bitchy - he's treating his job like a hobby.
You should have poked all 4 of their eyes out.
I had a guy come & look at my furnace a while ago...all he did was hit the reset button...& he charged me $125...so you should feel less screwed than me...did that help at all?
How unprofessional. People in that business can do really well.
That doesn't sound all that expensive to me. "Girls" or prostitutes as they are called in Canada don't come cheap.
Not that I would know from personal experience. I just read a lot, ha,ha..
It sounds like my hubby needs to get into one of those jobs. He gets paid hardly anything for a maintenance job...but if he would specialize in one aspect of his job, he could make sooo much more!
A super expensive visit..you need a friend who's in the buisiness that won't charge you an arm and a leg. I think if the guy popped in with his girlfriend, I'd ask her point blank what her role was. If the answer didn't satisfy me, I'd tell her to wait outside..esp if the damned visit was costing me 75 bucks!
Thank God he didn't actually find anything wrong - then it would have been $4K for a new unit.
