Let me just preface this by saying that I KNOW I'm not a perfect mother. I have made mistakes all along the way. That being said I have to tell you what I heard today at Walmart.
My son and I were in the toy aisle at Walmart checking out some of the toys. There were two ladies in the same aisle each had a child. One of the mothers seemed to be annoyed with her daughter asking to see different toys and kept telling her to shut up. That peeved me off right off the bat. I have issues with telling ANYONE to shut up let alone my children. Anyway....As we were passing their cart the other lady told the little girl to be careful she might fall out of the cart. THE MOTHER chimes in with,"yeah, you'll bust your head open and I'm not going to call the doctor so you'll bleed to death." WHAT THE??? This little girl was maybe 3-4 years old.
Here's what I see wrong. Why bring the kid into the aisle if you aren't going to let them check out the toys? That's just like torture to a kid! Second as the mother you are a person who is supposed to love them unconditionally and make them feel safe why would you tell a child that you are going to let them bleed to death? I don't think for a minute that she meant what she was saying. She was probably just agitated but for heavens sake think before you speak!
Think of all the damage that could be avoided if we just took a moment to think before we speak.

I agree - if you're not going to let the child look at toys don't even go down the toy aisle. I don't like seeing parents act like their children don't mean anything to them.
Being a parent sucks...
So I'm never going to do it. ;)
Steve~
Poor kid!
Ok, you are not going to like what I used to say to my kids then....I would tell them "try not to get sick today, I'm not in the mood to go to the doctor...." I would giggle and give them a wink..
When William would take off with his skate board, I would tell him basically the same thing with, "Try not to get hurt today, I'm not in the mood to go to the doctor"...Of course my kids knew that I would take them to the doctor when I needed to.
I would avoid the toy department unless I was willing to have the kids look at the toys...
I would guess that they were both young, inexperienced moms who will learn better down the line. You know those kids don't come with instruction manuals....
Bekah-If you walk into the toy aisle it's a given that the child will want to touch.
Steven- IT's not for everyone.
Myutopia-I wonder how she talks when she's not in public.
Funky Bee- They weren't really young. They looked to be my age. UGG I'm not really young anymore!
Lucy-Winking and giggling would have been different. She was just snapping at the child.
SHUT UP! Just kidding! I said that with a smile...lol...can you tell?
to this day I remember my mother telling me my older brother was planned so she could marry. My youngest was to get them back together, I was not planned...which loosely translates to a 10 year old, MISTAKE!
Careful. Words are devestating.
On my last round of xmas shopping I decided all the parents toting their children through the toy department were a bunch of sadists torturing their kids. Seriously - how mean can you possibly be?
(excluding the obvious exceptions - not being able to get a babysitter, etc)
I despair at some people's lack of parenting skills.
My f-i-l's mother told him many times that she tried to DIY abort him but he was stubborn and hung on. It still upsets him.
get back on the soapbox - it's the right place to be. Why do these people breed?
Man,these women suck! I think if you go to check out toys with the kids, its a total given that they handle a few toys. I mean, there are demos there or kids to check out for crying out loud..but the woman who told the child that she was gonna let the kid bleed to death if they hurt themselves was way over the line. Sure, no mother is perfect, but I think, despite never having met you in person, I think you are a waaay better mother than these two women could ever aspire to be. Karma is a bitch..someday when their mothers are old, the kids might turn and say, "Don't fall and break your hip Mom because I'll leave you there on the floor in pain".
