My husbands busiest time at work is over now. He has put in some incredible hours as of late and I'm looking forward to seeing more of his handsome face. He worked from 7am Saturday to 3:30am on Sunday. Slept two hours and went back to work to finish everything up, he got home a little after 5pm Sunday afternoon.
I'm so proud of him. We've been here for a whole year now and he's made a real difference at his place of business. It was difficult for him to make the choice to take this job and move the family to a new state. Even though I often miss all the family we left behind I think it was the right move. I can see our kids turning to teenagers here. Bringing their friends and lounging on my furniture, eating all our food...I'm looking forward to it.
We've learned about bugs here. Cockroaches the size of your thumb. Stink bugs that looked like they could carry my son away, and caterpillars invading like crazy. Little lizards have been fun to watch as well as the variety of birds that frequent my back yard. It's a nature lovers place for sure.
We've been squeezed out of a ton of money between homeowners insurance (thank you Katrina) and flood insurance. Registration for our cars (who keeps proof of sales tax when you've owned the car for a couple of years?) Energy bills that pop up with fees that are more than the original bills. It's been a learning experience for sure.
This year I really want to make an effort to get out and explore more. It seems like when we live somewhere we don't take in the local sites because it's just always there. That doesn't make much sense I guess. Here's an example. I lived in Colorado for most of my life but I hadn't seen a lot of the things that people come to see when they visit. The Royal Gorge, Great sand dunes, Pikes peak etc. etc. We had to make an effort to get out to see things and it was worth it. I really want my kids to be able to look back on great experiences they had as children. Hopefully we can get our butts motivated now that things have slowed down a little.
I had no idea where this post was going so thanks for sticking it out! ;P

THEY CAN! Those bugs are freakin' HUGE.
Add to the rest of the bug list the "Love Bug season." EWWWWW I hate Love Bugs - they get splattered all across my car during their "mating" season. It's so nasty, and there are always so many of them. I thought there were a ton of Love Bugs in Florida, but there are *clouds* of them here. At least it's only once a year.
I, of course, highly recommend you visiting Lafayette sometime while you're out exploring your area and surrounding areas ;-)
There actually are some beautiful places around Louisiana, swamps and forests and stuff like that, so it'll be pretty easy for you to find something to explore.
Bekah-How could I forget the "love bugs"? EWW! You are on my list of places to visit Ms.Lafayette!
When we lived at the beach, the roaches were huge like that too, but people called them waterbugs to make them seem less gross!
Yeah but do you have camel spiders?
Well, you just listed the entire south for those bugs. I hate the waterbugs, large cockroaches. My kids will scream for "daddy" to come save them and he will pick up a magazine and splatter that bug all over the floor. I then hand him a paper towel and make him clean up the mess. Yek!!!!!
Glad CCB made it through his busy period. This is our slow period so we take every call we can get.
Good luck with your exploring Louisana.
@edge - Gross. I just looked up camel spiders on Wikipedia - NASTY!!
Why are bugs and spiders so scary looking? Why couldn't they have been cuter? Like little puppies?
Okay, is your hubby a spy or what? Who keeps those hours?
It's funny, when we were little our parents took us "sight seeing" every weekend in either DC, Annapolis, Baltimore, Virgina and other areas of Maryland. I can truly say it's some of the best memories of my life and it even added in some history and learning. It's a great thing to do with your family and I agree, a lot of us take our local attractions for granted. My hubby and I have decided that we are going to try our hardest to visit a museum or attraction or some other sights in our area as often as possible to keep up refreshed on all of the resources we have here in our back yards. We all really do live in a beautiful country, we need to take advantage of that. Good luck OGO, these will be great times for you and your family.
