Of Barbies and Action Hero's

I played Barbies with my son today. I have to say it was quite an experience. It didn't happen on purpose really, it was accidental. I had been cleaning the kids bathroom and stepped into my daughters room to see what was happening with my soap on her t.v. My son came in to find me and saw my daughters dolls laying all over the floor. He asked her if he could play with them. (Isn't he sweet?) She said he could.(Aren't they precious?)

Anyway.....It made me remember when my daughter was little and she wanted me to play Barbies with her. It was all about changing their clothes and doing their hair. There was very little storyline, it was all about fashion. NOW my son on the other hand had his own running commentary on what was happening. There was no fashionistas here! There was something about "You'll never get me!" and "Look I can stand on top of the bus!" It was all about action and transforming the bus from touring vehicle to a concert stage and back. It was interesting to see how differently they used the same toys.

I used to think that kids were basically the same. It was all in how you raised them. Holy Cow was I wrong. Boys are a completely different creature from girls. They are hardwired that way. The only toy guns we have at our house are squirt guns but that doesn't matter. ANYTHING can become a gun, or a sword, or a bomb. I'm so glad I was blessed with both a daughter and a son. It's such a treat to see how different they are.

Have a fantastic weekend!

My littlest sister had a whole collection of Barbies. There was a boy next door the same age who used to come and borrow one every now and then.

He wasn't allowed to have anything resembling a doll. His father thought that was too girlie...

He still played with them just like your son, and my sister played like your daughter.

LOL, my son yelled at me the other day to get away from something on the floor because it was a bomb. He looked genuinely concerned.

It was one of those buttons from a pair of jeans.

Still cracks me up. How fun to play Barbie's with him. Mine won't do "girl stuff".

I always thought it was funny when I'd babysit for a kid and his parents had a "no gun" rule in the house... but then he'd turn a stick or a flower in to a gun. It's like, yeah, if they want to play guns, they're GOING to play guns. One time I had a kid make a hand gun out of legos. Talent, but he had to tear it apart before his parents got home.

Oh and I just remembered... You know those palm crosses church people make out of palm leaves on Palm Sunday? I think it's hilarious when the boys turn them around and use them as palm swords.

I say it all the time, I mean the difference growing up between me and my brothers, my niece and my nephew, I mean, it's so crazy how different we see things - like toys! It's awesome that you have one of each to see it in!

Have a great weekend OGO, glad you're feeling better.

LOL! I have two sons and it is funny to see how different they are from my nieces. I can completely relate to your story. My oldest who is 3, is all about Buzz Lightyear, and yes, everything is a laser gun. His favorite "gun" is a flashlight. Yes, they are TOTALLY different creatures, boys and girls. And I remember I LOVED playing with matchbox cars with all my boy cousins growing up. In fact, for awhile I prefered them over Barbie. Hey, Barbie didn't have a parking garage with a cool ramp or a car wash, although I have to think if she really wanted them she could have gotten Ken to buy them for her (hee! hee!) ;-)

Thank goodness you're one of the few parents I know who won't have a hissy fit when a boy plays with a doll.

I used to play with GI Joe and those plastic cowboys and Indians when I was a kid. Wouldn't touch a doll, unless I was chopping its hair off. Maybe that's why God gave me boys instead of girls;)...of course, they like Barbies and guns both. Guys are strange:)

I think you're right...there's just something in the genes between boys and girls.

Also, making bombs or guns out of Barbies is probably something every boy would do!

LOL! That is great. Did you ever see the experiment done with 18 month old toddlers. They were placed in front of their mothers with a glass barrier between the child and mother. The girls all looked at their mothers and then sat down and cried because they couldn't get to her. The boys immediately began beating on the glass then they began an intricate inspection, searching the top, bottom and sides of the barrier to try to figure a way through it. Needless to say each girl got out fastest because they got picked up to stop them from screaming.

Mr T is having to stop me buying Little Miss T a lego set because she's only 6 weeks old. She is going to have the best lego set ever whether she wants it or not. And a Meccano set too. Unfortunately that's what happens when your mother is a building surveyor.
