Sign o' the times

My baby girl started junior high this year. She is adjusting well but my bank account has been hemorrhaging ever since. When I was in school my parents were responsible for purchasing my supplies, things I would need. In addition to that I'd have to bring kleenex for the snotty seasons to share with the other kids. Does that sound familiar?

NOW Not only do we need to purchase the things that she will need to do her work but I have to purchase teachers supplies too. I had to send in things like printer paper, over head projector markers, clorox wipes, kleenex, and ziploc bags. (Let me tell you that tracking down the markers for the overhead projector wasn't an easy task.) Anyway my point is that these teachers aren't being given enough budget to get what they really need to run their classes. It is quite aggravating for me because that's not where the spending stops. OH no! See I still had to send in 20 bucks for "materials". Then there was the fee I had to pay for my daughter to join the art club, that was another 20 bucks. There are lunches at a $1.35 a day. Money for school uniforms. Oh and the band fee that will be coming around soon it's something like 40 dollars too. We're only half way through the first quarter! Did I mention that my daughter just brought home her first over priced fundraising project of the year? *sigh*

I hear people talking about the sad state of education. Well what do you expect when the schools can't even afford their own markers?!

The education system is no different than any other business. There is graft and corruption in teachers just like in lawyers, bankers, preachers, etc. My children's high school office could not make needed copies because the school Principal had taken home the new copy machine. Many other school allocated supplies were found in his home as well. Dedicated teachers (of which there are fewer and fewer) must pay from their own pockets for many school supplies or let the children do without. By the way, the school principal still teaches in the public school system because he had tenure and he explained that the packages had his name on the boxes and he thought they were for him.

My kids are grown, but honestly... this hasn't changed, if anything gotten worse. My Hubs' biggest gripe was when they came up with "school trips" to, oh, say, ANOTHER COUNTRY and if you didn't come up with the bucks to send your kid, then you were just JUNK and your kid was worse. I mean, REALLY...? Who has that kind of money laying around? I don't even go to other countries!! Sorry...rather got off on a rant here...

Maybe if they spent money on schools instead of a "Tiger Habitat" for Mike (LSU), they could buy their own freakin' supplies!

OY! What a nightmare. I know that at one point I was thinking about leaving the industry that I am in and becoming an elementary school art teacher and then I realized that I dont want to be poor for the rest of my life...sad huh?

It's so sad because teachers, of all people, should be paid the most. It sucks that the parents have to suffer for the governments insufficiencies...

Granny annie - If that school board believed what that principal said, then they get what they deserve....He should be fired.

It does seem to be getting out of hand. $ 20.00 for supplies? What supplies! Come on.... What does the school district pay for?

Administrative costs suck us all dry...it stinks that more $$$ does not go to the kids.
