Let's talk food

So since I've started this whole "trying to lose weight thing", (I refuse to call it a diet. Diet is a 4 letter word you know! )I've been trying to take things we love to eat around here and make them a little healthier or lower in calories. I can't take away cookies and cake from my whole family because they have to many calories for me! So I've learned that by substituting applesauce for oil in baking recipes I can knock 910 calories out of a recipe (1/2 cup) Isn't that amazing! It tastes great too!

I've been experimenting with things that are supposed to be good for us too. I read that flax seed is supposed to be really good for us with it's fancy omega oil. Did you know that you can substitute it in for an egg or even fat in a recipe? I've replaced 1 egg in a couple of recipes now. I'm too chicken to replace all the eggs. It works! It's lower in calories and it adds in good stuff. Who knew? I don't know if flax seed is something that will stick around in my house but it sure has been fun to play with.

OH! Did you know you can bake bread in a crock pot? I tried that last weekend. It's pretty tasty. I have baked pudding cakes in there before but never bread. My crock pot is a cylinder so I couldn't fit a bread pan in the pot so I improvised and lined my pot with foil. It doesn't look pretty but it sure tastes good! I think the next crock pot I get will be an oval one. It would be cool to be able to bake bread in the summer without heating up my kitchen.

Any who......Sorry about all the food talk. I know not everyone gets as excited about these things as I do but it's been fun learning so I thought I'd share.

Flax seed oil is one of the best things that you can do for you and your family. Did you know that taking it everyday will help you lose weight?

My crock pot is an oval pot and it is made by West Bend. I got one when I first got married and it lasted for about 30 years. Then my brother gave me a different kind and it cooked too fast. Last year TF got me my new West Bend and i LOVE it. It comes with a base and the pot sits on top. You could easily cook bread in it.

Another way to get more nutrition in your diet would be to replace refined sugar with sugar in the raw. It's a little more expensive but it has all the nutrients that are stripped from refined sugar. My natural health care doctor only uses sugar in the raw. You can find it in grocery stores. It also will not send your insulin levels up as fast as refined sugar, a very good point to remember.

Wow, thanks for the healthier cooking info, seriously! I've been looking all over the web for healthier recipes, but everything has half a dozen ingredients I've never heard of - none of which seem to be in more than one recipe. I don't mind spending a little extra for healthy stuff, but I don't like to buy something I'll only use one time. Any tips you post are much appreciated. :)

Sorry to sound completely dumb but do you mean applesauce, as in stewed apples? It might be something you can't get over here, like Hershey bars, mountain dew, Wendy's, Taco Bell, chilli dogs....(note how much I love American junk food!!!)

PS - do you mean crockpot as in things like these?
