Today was the
Mardi Gras parade in my little town. I can't believe how much crap we came home with. I don't know if the parades in other cities are like the one we have here I have to assume bigger city, bigger parade, more crap to bring home. We brought home 12.5 lbs of beads alone. BEADS! I don't know what we are supposed to do with them now but we have still have beads from the Christmas parade and
Mardi Gras the year before. *sigh* We brought home 10 cups, 5 footballs, a soccer ball, a beach ball, a jump rope, Mc Donalds cookies, a tomahawk, a creepy dragon finger, a toy giraffe, tons of coins and candy. This is so weird to me. Where I come from you might get the occasional float that tossed candy, cups, or squirted water at you but nothing like they do down south. If you don't throw something to the crowd you get heckled!
It was chilly but we had a lot of fun. This is the first year my husband has been able to go with us, usually he has to work. I hope you had a great day!
Wonder what 12 1/2 lbs of beads looks like?

Wait a second....don't you have to show something to get some beads? Man! You guys were busy! :)
Mardi Gras is nuts here. We normally come home with at least that many PER PERSON. The night parades normally have less people attend them so you bring more crap home. I normally throw out our beads once in a while, or give them to people when they come visit from out of town. You can look up information to call your local krewes and see if they take back beads to re-use.
I remember going to Florida on vacation as a kid & some guy throwing beads into the hotel pool for all the kids...now I'm thinking he just had the same problem you guys are having now...how do I get rid of THAT many beads?!
Can't say we have mardi gras here or anything like it. I watch the New Orleans one on tv and think to myself that there are way too many people and way too many things that can happen. Guess I'm just old. lol
I have heard about what some of the women (using the term lightly) do to get those beads. I have been to New Orleans, but I'll never go at Marti Grai time. I'm glad you had fun. My grandkids do like playing with the beads if you want to send me some.
Techymike-Yeah, if I'd have "shown" something they would have been throwing rocks instead.
Bekah- I've got company coming! Bye bye beads. I'll stuff them in their luggage when they aren't looking!
Chick-I think I should just drive down the street with my stereo up and toss them out the window when I see people.
Nan-I never witnessed any of this till we moved here. I assure you the event we went to was very family friendly unlike SOME parades.
Lucy-I have no desire to go to NOLA for Mardi Gras I think it gets a little too crazy for this girl.
You would definitely have some sunburned tah-tahs if you had shown them for every strand of those beads!
I have never once in my life been to a Mardi Gras parade of party of any kind. Not because I wasn't invited but because I never was anywhere there was one. Now I want to go.
Let me tell you...no where in the country, and only a few places in the world, do parades like they do in LA! They throw parades for weddings, for funerals, for celebrations, for holidays, you name it, and they do it UP! I'm jealous! I love that they are so spirited down there...
