Paranoid? Or AWARE or our surroundings?

It's been a little interesting around here the last few days. I coulda done without most of it but whataya gonna do about it?

On Saturday I discovered that there was some sort of water leaking into the wall between my computer desk and my kitchen. At first it was a "tick tick tick" sound then it turned into the sound of running water. I freaked! I tried to call my husband at work. (Of course this would happen when he was working late.) I don't know why I called him, I knew he wouldn't be able to rush home, I guess I thought he should know or something. I went next door to see if my neighbor could help me assess the problem but no one answered the door. I was on my own. I shut off the water main which stopped the problem but unfortunately it also stopped all the water into the house. *sigh* I called my neighbor and left a message for them. He came over shortly thereafter and climbed up into my intensely hot attic and found the source of my leak. ( I should mention that the attic freaks me out. I don't like climbing the ladder and I don't like the dimly lit small space.) It turns out it was the tube to the ice maker in my freezer. It was something I could tackle. I shut off the valve to that and was able to turn the water back on to the rest of the house. He came down drenched in sweat. CCB and I fixed the problem on Sunday afternoon and all is better. I have some baking to do to thank my neighbor man. How does a whole wheat french baguette sound neighbor man?

TODAY I was walking my sweet CCB out to the car when we noticed some strange activity on the end of the street. There were 3 men milling around and they seemed to be checking out everyones houses. One had no shoes only socks on. My husband told me to go inside because he didn't want them to see that he was leaving and I was going to be alone. So I did, but I kept an eye on the guys. They kept meandering down till they were at my neighbors driveway. One man was making large sweeping gestures with his hands. One just stood there and the other, well the other had no shoes. I saw them walk up the driveway and it appeared that they were talking to my neighbor lady. They hung out there for a long time and they guy kept up with his crazy hand gestures and I was concerned. I called the neighbor and she sounded spooked. She asked me to come over. She said they were claiming that they wanted to shoot a music video at her house. It sounded hinky to me so I told my daughter to keep an eye on me out the window and if anything happened she was to call the police. I walked over to here house but now the men were gone. They were inside her house with her. I walked to her front porch and they explained to me who they were as well. They told me they were shooting a christian music video and they loved the big oak tree in the front of my neighbors house. (It IS fantastic by the way.) They were only there for a few more minutes they told her to talk to her husband and that they would talk this evening.

I know we sound like paranoid freaks. These guys didn't look professional. They left no business cards. They didn't all have shoes for heaven's sake. How were we supposed to know they weren't there casing the neighborhood or looking for their next victim...home....alone.... Since then she has called to say that they are coming over on Thursday to negotiate compensation and that they plan to shut down our street on Saturday for the shoot. I'll be interested to see how all this plays out.

I swear I am not a paranoid freak.

Thanks for you comment on my pictures. You know that the best photograph I've seen on a blog was the one you took of footprints.

Go with your instincts with stuff like that.

Nice work on the fridge hose.

Working in a downtown church office for three years I got to deal with a lot of shady characters... everyone has a story and all the stories are BS. Keep a good head on your shoulders and never hesitate to call the police should you feel in anyway frightened.

what they all said...the worst thing in the world would be to have to say,"If only I'd called the police..."

Whole wheat french bread sounds yummy......I was busy baking banana bread most of the morning last Saturday as gifts for several people who have been helping me get my ham radio antenna up.

Listen lady, I would have been freaked out too....I would have not let them in my house with out my husband there....Let's review here: not dressed very good, no shoes, no identification.....No way! I hope everything works out, but it sounds "stinky" to me.

I'm impressed that you & neighborman tackled the water problem...way to go.

& no shoes? Yeah, that's not a red flag...huh? You were brave to go over there & potentially save your neighbor.

Okay, you are NOT paranoid! You never know what kind of people you are dealing with. And I do agree with Granny Annie, you should call the Better Business Bureau and just keep an out on these guys. They may be harmless, but better to be safe than sorry.

My hubby and I have both fallen off our attic steps at different points! He fell when one of the wood stairs split, I fell because I am an idiot and had my hands full of boxes and Christmas decorations and lost my balance. Both resulted in large bruises and scrapes, and thankfully that's it. The attic is not the most fun place to hang out!! and it's spooky! I always think an animal is going to jump out at me when I pull the steps down.

In terms of the "christian rock group" - I don't care who it is, and I don't think you're paranoid, but I would ALWAYS call the authorities if I see someone that I don't know and it seems shady. Even if you call the police non-emergency line. It's best for the police to come out and check these people out, not you and your neighbors. If they're legit then good for them, if not, the police will scare them off and they'll know that the neighborhood is aware of what's going on outside and they can't just come in and take advantage.

We have things like this happen in my neighborhood all the time. Some have been legitimate business people with permits to "solicit", others have been casing houses and the quick thinking of neighbors has led to their arrest in other robberies in our neighborhood including recovering stolen property.

Don't EVER feel bad about calling the police. It's the difference between your families safety and feeling a little silly for calling the police. THink about what's more important here...
