Just when I thought it was smooth sailing....

I got the results from my thyroid ultra sound today. My doc called it a multi nodular goiter. Nice huh? Bet you picture me with bug eyes and a huge lump in my neck. Na. It's not like that. They use the term Goiter for any enlargement of the thyroid. They still haven't received my first set of ultrasound pictures and so they don't know if the nodules are bigger or not. I have to have another test. This one is a thyroid scan. From what I read they give me some radioactive iodine stuff then take pictures of my thyroid. From that they can tell whether the nodules are hot (over active) or cold (under active) we don't want cold ones. Cold ones can be cancerous. Cancer is only a small percentage but I don't even want to have the WORD in connection to me so ...yeah...

Started out thinking BAH it's nothing. At least we're being thorough. The longer I've thought about it I have to admit I'm nervous. Treatment for thyroid cancer is pretty easy from what I read but....yeah...still don't want it.

SO anyway......How's your morning been?

Instead of radioactive iodine, the technetium scan is recommended for patients with multinodular goiter, as RAI can cause transient thyrotoxycosis. The Doppler color flow test done with ultrasound has better diagnostic value, to determine if nodules can be suspected for cancer.
Nodules that have blood flow in them and larger then 1 cm needed to be tested with FNAB.
Good luck!!

I don't know who you are Anonymous but thank you very much. I had seen the term technetium scan in the stuff I read. My doctor just said "thyroid scan" and I don't have the actual lab order yet so I appreciate your help. Your explanation of the blood flow was much easier to understand then what I read. Thanks again.

No prob.
My relative has thyroid problem as well {autoimmune thyroidis]for about 10 years, diagnosed at age of 42 so I was doing some research on thyroid disorders.
Cold nodules without blood flow are composed from the "dead" scar-forming or connective tissue and therefore benign in most cases. The radioactive scan is usually recommended if patient has low TSH [hyperthyroid];sometimes the terminology multinodular goiter is used to describe thyroid of normal size but with "uneven texture" on the ultrasound image even if these nodules are only few mm [NOT the cm]. Sorry for long lecture, hopefully it will make some stuff a little easier to understand:)
Best of luck!!

You're in my thoughts today---hoping for smooth sailing to resume.

Thank you Lorna! I appreciate you!

Anonymous-everything keeps coming up with hyperthyroidism. I've been hypothyroid for over a decade now. Does that matter?

I am not the expert, but one of the possibilities is that the HYPOthyroidism can be result of postpartum thyroid inflamation[thyroiditis]; as the result of this inflamatory process, some thyroid tissue have been destroyed causing hypothyroidism; the "ruines" of that tissue made up nodules.
