It would appear that my son is afraid of the potty. What gave it away? The tears and snot simultaneously running down his face or the white knuckles he had while holding on to the handles? We're gonna have to conquer the fear before he can use it.
He had a similar issue with the drain in the bathtub. We've talked about it a lot. Explained that he is too big to fit down the drain and that he is safe. Now he repeats that stuff back to us and says he's not afraid but he doesn't take his eyes off the drain till he is safely out of the tub.
Anyone else have this sort of problem with potty training? I'm open to suggestions.

Oh my, so sorry to hear this. I was afraid of the potty too when I was a wee little one - well, just afraid of the whole flushing part. My nephew has to be repeatedly told (he's 5) that he won't go down the bathtub drain. I wish I had some advice for you. sadly, it's you that I will be coming to for advice on this type of thing one day! Good Luck
My sister had a similar problem potty training her son.
She corrected it by telling him that if he didn't use the potty she was going to kill him in his sleep.
After he had stayed awake for about a week he finally gave in and started using the potty..
no ideas on the potty.
The bathtub drain, this I have experience with.
Hannah planted a butt cheek on the drain after I'd opened it to drain her bath water. Never have my camera when the best photos opps happen. go figure...
(I know, I'm evil) lol
Now we cover the drain with a rubber mat (like for a kitchen sink).
My son was afraid of the drain for a long time. Even when I'd show him that toys were too big to go down, he was still nervous. Apparently that's a common fear, because Mr. Rogers supposedly addressed it. ^_^
I suggest a potty chair. No flush, no fear, LOL! For a while there, my son sat backwards on the potty (helps prevent pee-through - under the seat and over the edge, you know) and I think that helped him be less afraid of it.
Poor kid. I mean, poor you too, but imagine being afraid of most of the contents of a bathroom? That's a pretty hard room to avoid.
I have a similar experience.
I was flushed down the toilet when I was young. I'd stay away too if I were him.
I dunno...but I would suggest tht you don't give him a swirly. ;)
Steve~
Did he see 'Flushed Away'...it's either gonna help alot...or ruin him forever.
